I remember this commercial from childhood…kids screaming, dog barking, phone ringing and moms screaming “Calgon, Take Me Away!!!!!!!”

How many times have we all wished to be taken away since becoming moms? How about taking yourself to a tropical resort filled with fresh flowers and the music of the Pacific Islands for a sumptuous dinner and  Mai Tais?

You don’t need to travel all the way to Hawaii to catch the aloha spirit. Just take a little trip down to Mission Beach and escape reality for a bit like the tourists do. Each summer the Catamaran Resort sponsors sunset luaus  just like the ones I’ve enjoyed in Hawaii.

We never let a summer go by without a family trip to the Catamaran. We love being out on a warm summer night soaking in the sites and sounds of a vacation paradise from the grassy lawn that overlooks Mission Bay.

After the ceremonial entrance of the pig, a buffet of fresh salads and fruits, Kalua pig, pork loin, miso glazed salmon, guava chicken, assorted sides and fabulous desserts is served.

Funny how you can live in a place for so long and be unaware of the fun events happening around you. Until I called the Catamaran to request two luau tickets for a mom’s guide reader, I had no idea that its sister hotel, the Bahia Resort, had an annual Brazilian Carnival.

Guests are greeted with the traditional drink of Brazil, the Caipirinha, plus a visit from some of the exotic animals of the region. The bayside feast includes churrasco style Pichanha, grilled beef carved to order and many other Brazilian specialties. After dinner the high-energy music, bright colors and traditional dancing by “Sole e Mar” will take the audience on a tour of Brazil.
