Float on!

As the mom of a one-year-old, my life is so full of activity and noise that, even when I take a minute to sit down and relax, my mind is running with all of the things I should be doing. You know what I mean, right?

When I heard of “float therapy”  — a new way to “let it go” through deep, weightless, silent relaxation in a warm pool of water, I was intrigued. But when the owner of A Quiet Place Floatation Spa invited me to come and float as his guest, I immediately had anxiety about it. Could I actually relax in a dark, quiet tank and float in the water for an hour? It sounded isolated and claustrophobic.

But on behalf of all San Diego moms who could use a little more peace and relaxation, I decided to give it a go. This is what I discovered…

What is a “floatation spa” and how does it differ from an “isolation/deprivation tank”, or does it?
This depends on who you are and what you are looking to get out of it! The tank can be as dark and quiet as you want it to be, therefor giving you the “isolation tank” feel. I, however, decided to play music throughout my experience, and also left the tank door half open so a small light would shine in.

I was nervous about feeling claustrophobic, but it wasn’t that way at all! I could spread my arms and legs completely out and drift from one side to the other! With dim light and the music playing, I was completely aware of my surroundings and never felt trapped.

Why would I go to one? What are the benefits?
As moms, sometimes we just need to “get away from it all”, and when we do, we turn to different avenues of relaxation or meditation….yoga, massage, shopping! And although I highly enjoy all of these activities, I encourage you to try a float sometime and just completely let go. Did you know that one hour of floating is equal to four hours of sleep?! Here are just a few of the many benefits that the float will give you:

• Promotes total calm and peaceful relaxation
• Eliminates fatigue and jet lag
• Improves sleep
• Alleviates stress (mental and physical)
• Increases motivation, diminishes depression, anxiety and fear
• Facilitates freedom from habits, phobias and addictions
• Creates mental clarity, alertness
• Decreases the production of cortisol, ACTH, lactic acid and adrenaline
• Speeds up rehabilitation and recovery
• Relieves pain (arthritis, migraines, injuries and so on)
• Boosts immune function
• Improves circulation and distribution of oxygen and nutrients
• Reduces blood pressure, pulse, heart rate and oxygen consumption

And, more than anything, I wish I had discovered float therapy during my pregnancy! During your 2nd or 3rd trimester, you will be given a pillow/noodle so that you can lay on your stomach. Floating completely weightless decreases inflammation and swelling, and takes away your stress and anxiety!

How does it work?
The moment you walk in the door of the spa, you can immediately let go. Dim lights, the smell of lavender, the soft music, the chamomile tea…the whole experience is very…zen. Once you’re settled and watch a brief video explaining how everything will work, you step into your private room and rinse off in a warm shower. You then slip directly into the pod, put your earplugs in (to avoid swimmers ear), close the pod door (if you want), lean back, and voila! time to relax! You have the option of floating naked, or in your bathing suit. The level of salt in the tank makes it physically impossible for you to sink, and you can even do some stretches or turn on your side if you choose. I was also nervous that an hour would be way too long, but I found it to be completely the opposite! Since it took me a few minutes to really settle in, I think I was just about to drift off to sleep when the lights come on signaling my hour was up. I probably could have floated for another whole hour! Once your time is up, you’ll step back into the shower to rinse the salt off. At A Quiet Place Floatation Spa, they also provide you with nice organic soap, shampoo, and tea!

Is it expensive?
Surprisingly, NO! First time clients enjoy a one hour float for just $38! Even better, Richard is giving one of our Moms Guide Readers the chance to win a free float! We will choose one lucky winner from the comments below. Just tell us how you would benefit from an hour long float!

Is it sanitary?
Yes! I was pleasantly surprised at how clean the whole venue was. Each of the pods has an amazing filtration system, providing an extremely sanitary environment. This state-of-the-art purification system removes particles up to 5 micron (which is 5/100th of a human hair!). The filtration process runs 24/7, with the exception of when it’s in use, and completes, at minimum, 3 full turnovers between each user session. On top of that, all pods and showers are completely cleaned with an anti bacterial solution after each user.

Where do I try it out?
If you’re like me, I always turn to Yelp for “real” reviews on a business before I go try it out. Lucky for you, I’ve already done this, and can confirm that A Quiet Place Floatation Spa has 5 stars! I am even working on my 5-star yelp review today! This is definitely the place you should go! This business is known for being clean, professional, comfortable, and personal. Plus, their pods are larger than many others you’ll find. It is an experience unlike any other, and I walked away feeling a complete sense of relaxation and euphoria.
