A couple of years ago I took a floral design workshop with my daughter that made me say, “This is how I want to kick off fall every year.”
Not far from our house was an adorable local florist who offered us the opportunity to step away from our hectic schedules and escape into a room overflowing with the beauty and aroma of fresh greenery and flowers.
Mallory was just 8 years old at the time, but had a better talent for design than I did.
The class cost about $50 and lasted a couple of hours. Together (and with the help of the pros) we plucked our favorite colored and shaped flowers from a vast assortment and managed to assemble festive centerpieces for our Thanksgiving table.
I thought this would be a wonderful mother/daughter tradition, but sadly that floral shop closed. So I’ve done some research to try to find a replacement class, and this is what I’ve come up with . . .
Four Seasons Flowers in the Poway area offers a variety of holiday-themed workshops including a floral cornucopia class on November 19th and a holiday candlelight centerpiece on December 3rd.
Isari Flower Studio in Solana Beach offers workshops each month. There’s nothing listed for this holiday season, but a 2017 calendar is “coming soon,” and the space is available for rental and private workshops.
And the San Diego Floral Society meets in Balboa Park to teach floral design in a series of affordable classes.
The holiday are often hectic, but if you’re looking for a way to bring more meaning and joy to the next few months, try creating your own centerpiece. Whether with your kids or as a Moms’ Night Out, it’s a great way to relax, unwind and enjoy the beauty of the season.
