Kindergarten Planning

school bus with rainbowIs 2017 the year your little will go to elementary school?Although we’re 7-8 months away from the start of the next school year, there is a lot you need to do between now and then to prepare, starting with visiting open houses and taking school tours before February.

Why February? Well, private schools, many charters and San Diego Unified’s Department of School Choice have application due dates in February meaning, if you would like to consider just about any school outside of your neighborhood school, you will want to be in contact with admissions departments between now and the end of January.

Attending open houses is a great way to get an understanding of what kindergarten is all about, and there are numerous ones to attend as early as next week. You’ll hear about each school’s typical kindergarten day, the standards that will be taught, the things children should know before entering.

tree-of-knowledgeIf the schools that you are interested in (whether public, private, charter or magnet) don’t offer open houses, they most certainly offer tours. Just call the admissions office to schedule one.

If you can attend a local open house first, you’ll learn a lot and be better prepared with questions that you want to ask your tour guide. Here’s a list of some upcoming opportunities:

The Child’s Primary School: January 10th from 6:30 – 8 p.m.

The Rock Academy: January 10th at 6 p.m., January 11th at 8:30 a.m., February 7th at 6 p.m. and February 8th at 8:30 a.m.

Thank you for the comment Heidi! Yes, we see that there was a change, but they also stipulate “After the deadline, applications will only be accepted for new-to-district students–including military and all incoming TK/Kindergarten pupils–and for families who move to a different area within the district boundaries.” so hopefully families who meet that criteria will see this in time to become involved in the choice program.

SDUSD changed their Choice deadline this year from February to November. The Choice application period is already closed.
