San Diego moms are not used to having to entertain young children indoors so rainy weeks like this one can be a challenge. But if you’re itching to get out of the house, here are some of our favorite things to do indoors with the kiddos . . .
San Diego has a number of awesome indoor playgrounds that are especially geared to young children. Moms can sit back and relax while kids get their wiggles out at Kid Ventures, Kidsville PlayGym, Playtown, We Rock the Spectrum, Playwerx and FUNbelievable. Each charge a fee per child for entry, and Kid Ventures now charges a parent fee to non-members. Visit this directory for more information.
Indoor Trampoline Parks & Gymnastics
Trampoline parks are preschooler friendly during the day and great for a variety of ages when the bigger kids are out of school. In addition to jumping, they often provide basketball hoops, slides, video games and rock wall climbing. Chelsea’s son Oliver loves Rockin’ Jump best, while my kids are all about Urban Jungle, Jump Around and Flip Force.
Museums and Aquariums
Don’t forget about our incredible museums. Legoland’s Sealife Aquarium and Birch Aquarium offers primarily indoor fun.
North County has The Museum of Making Music, East County has the Creation and Earth Science Museum, and downtown has The New Children’s Museum. And of course Balboa Park has a lot of great kid-friendly museums including the Model Railroad Museum, the RH Fleet Science Center (with Kid City specifically catering to kids 5 and younger!), the Natural History Museum and the Air and Space Museum.
Several museums also show kid-friendly and educational movies, which just add even more value to your visit!
Have you taken your kid bowling yet? Even preschoolers (with the help of bumpers and ramps) are able to bowl! Parkway Bowl in the East County also has rides, air hockey and games for additional indoor entertainment.
Of course, you don’t need to leave the house to have fun. Let your kids splash in puddles. Give them an umbrella and go for a walk. Invite your friends over for crafts and a potluck lunch. Snuggle up on the couch and watch a movie.
And if you think of something fun that we missed here, please share!
