5 Fun Things to do This Week

Spring is in the air this week, and the Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch are now open for your touring pleasure. It’s a great place to take a stroll or wagon ride, to play and pose for family photos. Here’s ours from 2009!

The Flower Fields are located at 5704 Paseo Del Norte in Carlsbad and are open to the public seven days a week from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Prices are – Adults: $14.00  Seniors 60+: $13.00  Children 3-10 yrs.: $7.00  Children 2 yrs. & under: Free

tide pools are ready for daytime viewing …

Now is a great time of year to check out San Diego’s tide pools.

You’ll want to consult a tide chart like this one, and arrive as early as 2 hours before low tide and up to 2 hours following the low tide for the best viewing. It’s a warm week, and low tide occurs during the day so get out there and enjoy.

Popular spots for inspecting sea life and plants include Cabrillo National Monument Tide PoolsCardiff State Beach Tide PoolsDike Rock Tide PoolsShell Beach Tide Pools and Swami’s State Beach Tide Pools.

STEM is rolling on all week …

The Biocom Institute Festival of Science and Engineering kicked off its ten-day educational experience last weekend and the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fun continues into this weekend. There is something for all ages including interactive demonstrations, hands-on activities and dynamic speakers.

The event we’re most interested in attending is Miramar College’s FREE Science Fun for Kids 9-99 where faculty and students will present: How to Get DNA from Anything, Sensory Perception, Crime Scence, Blast Off with Diet Coke/Slime, Physics/Geology activities, Fun with Math games and Puzzles.

Activities will take place from 9 a.m. until Noon in the science building located in the heart of Mira Mesa campus, 10440 Black Mountain Road. Check out the full schedule of STEM events here.

cherry blossoms are beckoning …

The Japanese Friendship Garden in Balboa Park will hold its 12th annual Cherry Blossom Festival this Friday, Saturday and Sunday between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Families can enjoy the Japanese custom of hanami – appreciating the beauty of the cherry blossom! Japanese foods, performances and entertainment are included in the ticket price. $10 for adults. Children 6 and younger are free. More information is available here.

If you have children, you won’t want to miss this weekend’s Just Between Friends Consignment Sale at the Scottish Rite Center. You’ll find strollers, cribs, bikes, backyard toys, clothing, books baby carriers and more.

Public shopping starts on Friday from 4pm-7pm and continues on Saturday from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m.  Tickets are $3 at the door
