It is one of our favorite times of the year — apple season in nearby Julian.
Pile into the car, take the scenic drive up to Julian and enjoy “u-pick” with the kids. It’s just about one of the sweetest ways to spend a fall day with your family, wandering local farms and orchards picking a variety of apples to take back home with you. Many trees are short enough for even preschoolers to reach.
Our favorite stops are Volcan Valley Apple Farm for its variety and abundance of apples and the Julian Mining Company for its abundance of other activities including gem mining, hay rides, tomahawk throwing and cider tasting.
Most sell their apples by the 1/2 peck bag, which can hold nearly 7 pounds of apples. Cost will be approximately $10 for the apples and the joyous time you spend wandering the beautiful orchards of Julian. While apples are the specialty of the town, several orchards also grow pears.
On September 23rd & 24th Julian will host its annual Apple Days Festival with children’s activities, music, dancing, an antique tractor display and wine and beer gardens. Our advice, though, is to visit this quaint town before the festival to ensure a bountiful u-pick experience. (apples are often gone by the end of September).
