The Neighborhood Exchange

Every month I attend the Armed Services YMCA Neighborhood Exchange, and I’m always amazed by the abundance of healthy fresh foods available to families who meet Federal Income Requirements.

On the 4th Thursday of the month, parents and children gather in the park at San Diego Armed Services YMCA headquarters on Santo Road to stock their cupboards with groceries. The event is fun filled thanks to support from active duty volunteers and members of the San Diego Community who come out to show their appreciation of military families. I’m there with PainCare of San Diego, offering complimentary chair massage. Starbucks is there handing out free coffee. Word A!ive gives out books. Dogs on Deployment has free pet food.

The Armed Services YMCA partners with San Diego Food Bank to provide a monthly food distribution for qualified families in zip codes 92123 and 92124. Food is first come, first served for the first approximately 150 families who arrive.

If your family could use this support, please contact the Armed Services YMCA or join us for the next event on September 28th!

This is an income based event. Please be sure to review the Federal Income Requirements for eligibility. Military families do not need to include BAH. If you live in another zip code, you can go one time out of area or please click here for other EFAP sites. Please note, families are only able to attend one San Diego Food Bank site per calendar month, which means they cannot go to Neighborhood Exchange and Miramar Food Locker in the same calendar month.
