Beach camping is a highlight of living in Southern California. Sadly, it is also notoriously difficult to reserve California State Park beach sites, especially for tent camping, due to the limited number of spots available. We were thrilled to discover that our San Diego YMCA offers tent camping, right at the edge of the ocean during Family Camp each year.
Fun for all ages, Family Camp at Camp Surf is a great way to get the kids outdoors, engaged in a variety of activities like surfing and body boarding, of course, but also archery, climbing, beach volleyball and arts and crafts.
While you’ll provide your own sleeping accommodations (unless your group of 12 or more rents one of the Y’s sleeping cabins), Camp Surf provides everything else you’ll need during your trip. Their young, fun staff will engage campers with skits at night and games during the day. And they’ll provide novice level instruction in surfing.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner are prepared and served in the large, clean, oceanfront dining hall. Coffee and juice drinks are available all day long.
The communal bathrooms and shower facilities are plentiful and clean. And clean port-o-potties are scattered throughout the beach camping area for easy access during the night.
Camp Surf is located on a gorgeous, private property in Imperial Beach. Registration for the 10 upcoming Family Camp weekend dates opens this week and sells out quickly. If you’re interested in snagging a spot for your family, be sure to register on February 1st as early as 9 a.m.
Children up to age 3 are free. Kids between 4 and 7-years-old cost $65-$85 depending on which weekend you select. Everyone over age 8 will be charged between $130 and $170, depending on your selected weekend. Fees cover space for your tent, meals throughout the weekend, activities including surfing and surfboards. Wet suit rentals are extra.
