When my kids were little, we loved going to mommy & me classes together. These days I’m just “mom,” not mommy or mama, and there are far fewer opportunities to share a new experience with my 12 and 13-year-old “babies.” But I found one last weekend, and I think you might enjoy sharing it with your tweens and teens too…
Stand up paddle boarding (SUP) combined with yoga is not new to San Diego, but it was new to us. What a fun and silly experience. We got a good workout, we enjoyed a beautiful day together and we laughed at ourselves…something teens don’t often do!
Chelsea of Vitamin Sea Yoga started our class with SUP basics on San Diego Bay in Coronado. We paddled to a little point with a view of the Coronado bridge and anchored the boards in preparation for our yoga class. All levels of experience were welcome, and there was nothing difficult about paddling out or practicing simple poses. Mallory had never done yoga before and fell off of her board the same number of times that her very experienced yogi mom did (once!).
Best of all, the cost for two glorious hours on beautiful San Diego Bay was only $20 per person and included these sweet photo collages. What a bargain!
I’m so glad that our good friends and favorite mother/daughter duo discovered SUP Yoga at Crown Cove Aquatic Center on Silver Strand State Beach. The affordable aquatics programs are part of Southwestern College and include youth camps, recreational paddle boarding, kayaking and CPR.
There are several more Saturday classes of SUP Yoga on the schedule, and we’re definitely signing up again. Chelsea told us that children of all ages are welcome as long as they are able to handle paddling out to the designated class spot about 10-15 minutes from the aquatic center.
