Field Trip Fun
A litte bit of country in the heart of the city
City Farmer’s Nursery. Ever heard of it? Up until about a year ago, I hadn’t either, so when the time came for my first trip, you can say that I was shocked to find such a great little farm in the middle of our big city. My family and I have spent so much time there in the past year that I would almost go as far as to say we’re “regulars”. Our first visit was just over a year ago for a babyfood making class, where the owner of the nursery opened up his home to my mommy tribe and invited a guest speaker to teach us all about feeding and cooking healthy food for our infants!
This family-owned garden center and farm prides themselves in organically growing every plant, bush, and tree that grows within the 2-acre property. Today marks the 43rd year that they’ve provided their customers with native, unique gardening and homesteading supplies, as well as free advice for the local gardening rookie, such as myself. Happy Birthday, City Farmers! The moms behind the MomsGuide love you!
But, it’s not just the organic plants, vegetables and friendly service that we come for. We love to spend the whole afternoon here, and bring our friends and family with us! We stop for a lemonade & cookie at the on-site Sunflower Coffee Co before we head out to visit with the animals. You can pet their miniature pony, feed the cow and goats, and watch the chickens peck around their coop. Make sure to check out their turkeys and turtles too!
We put Oliver in one of their radio flyer wagons and pull him around the nursery before we stop to let him play at their adorable playground, complete with swings, a teeter toter, and a mini barn!
In fact, City Farmer’s Nursery is so kid friendly that they have their own selection of radio flyers and kid-sized tools including rakes, shovels, and watering cans. Plus the kids can get their hands dirty and learn about the animals!
After our fun on the farm, we always head over to Nate’s Garden Grill…the nursery’s on-site restaurant. Local craft beers, live music, farm to table food, weekend brunch, and a dog friendly patio. Need I say more? Ok I will…how about the buckets of toys for your kids, the stack of board games for your date night, and the adorable wooden chairs to make your little one feel right at home. You sold yet?
Please support a local business and pay them a visit. You won’t be sorry.
