Free for all ages, this is the largest Oktoberfest celebration west of the Mississippi! The 46th annual festival covers an area of nearly six city blocks of La Mesa Village. Attracting more than 100,000 attendees annually, the three-day event features local and regional bands, traditional German dishes and plenty of German bier. Highlights include traditional biergarten sing-a-longs and interactive game; the original glücklich games, such as beer stein races, beer barrel rolls, keg bowling and keg hauling; a Kinder Garten with contests and hands-on activities; and an antique market and a vendor market. Dave Kinnoin wears many hats in his career: singer, songwriter, music producer, performing artist, character educator and philanthropist. In addition to his eight multi-award winning CDs, he has written hundreds of songs for Henson, Disney, Sesame Workshop, and dozens of other family entertainment and educational companies. His CHARACTER COUNTS! school assemblies represent the organization’s framework of ethics education nationwide and include songs he has written and performed especially for them. As a volunteer and board member with One Small House, Dave builds houses, health clinics, and other structures for struggling families and communities worldwide. For the Songs of Love Foundation, he volunteers his talents to write, produce and perform two songs per month for children facing tough medical, physical or emotional challenges.

Halloween is one of the most festive times of the year at Grossmont Center. Families from La Mesa and the surrounding area enjoy coming here for Trick-or-Treat Around the Center because this free event is an entertaining and safe way to spend Halloween. Come to Guest Services and pick up a free trick-or-treat bag, then use it to collect candy from all participating Center stores and restaurants starting at 3 p.m. Trick-or-treating goes until 5 p.m., or until supplies last. There’s nothing like seeing kids of all ages in colorful costumes smiling and laughing as they rush from store to store to get their treats!

The Encinitas 101 MainStreet Association will present its 18th Annual Safe Trick-or-Treat event. Historic Highway 101(Encinitas Blvd to K Street) will turn into “Pumpkin Lane” as local businesses stay open late to welcome trick-or-treaters. The public will be invited to see the many amazing pumpkins carved by the Self-Realization Fellowship (SRF) monks. Along the 101 there are several places to stop and enjoy Halloween-Themed activities. In the Lumberyard courtyard enjoy music and games, and in the SRF parking lot (next to their K Street Store) check out the Queens Court! Be sure to stop by the E101 office (818 S. Coast Hwy 101) and pick up your complimentary Halloween themed bag provided by presenting sponsor Lazy Acres. This event is free and families are welcome to join in the fun!
