5 Ways to Support Your Child in Music Lessons
Thinking about signing your child up for music lessons? Excellent! Introducing your child to music at a young age has many benefits, including improved performance in school and strong development of lifelong skills like goal-setting and patience.
But how can you support your child, without seeming overbearing? How involved should you be? Here are some tips from TakeLessons.com:
1. Be enthusiastic about their interest in music! Ask questions about what they’re learning, including what they like and dislike, what their goals are, and what they think of their teacher.
2. Provide a suitable time and place for practicing. Keep everything (books, instrument, and accessories like a music stand and metronome) organized, and make it a positive space.
3. Find ways to positively reinforce habitual practicing. A practice chart, where your child can add a star on days that he or she practices, can be a great motivator. You might also consider offering a reward or treat once a certain number is reached.
4. Celebrate with your child when they accomplish a goal! Knowing how proud you are can be a fantastic motivator as they set their next goal.
5. Don’t rule out playing yourself! If you can’t sing or read music, select something that doesn’t require it. Triangle, maracas, bongos – there are plenty of options that you can use to “jam” with your child. You might feel silly, but it can be a wonderful bonding experience!
With these tips, you can show your support and increase the likelihood of your child enjoying their lessons and continuing on. Happy learning!

Gingerbread Guest Post
Want to know what it’s like to participate in the Park Hyatt Aviara’s Gingerbread House Decorating Class? Here’s a special guest blog post by our contest winner, Joyce Wong featuring her adorable daughters, Alexis and Abigail…
Going to the Park Hyatt Aviara during the holiday season is always a treat in itself. Three years ago when I was pregnant with Abigail (2 1/2), my husband, Alexis and I had the pleasure of staying at the Park Hyatt Aviara right before Christmas. So this year, we were excited to continue this tradition by taking our daughters to the Park Hyatt to experience the joys, magic, and beautiful decorations and to top of off a gingerbread making class.
When we arrived at the Park Hyatt, a warm holiday spirit was present everywhere from the valet to the doorman to the other guests. The decorations were beautiful. As you walk though the lobby, you cannot miss the giant gingerbread mountain village with a train traveling through it, the floor to ceiling Christmas tree, the numerous beautifully decorated Christmas trees on silent auction, and all the other awesome holiday decorations throughout the hotel.
We were the first to arrive at the gingerbread making class and we were immediately welcomed by a team of pastry chefs. While we waited for the others to arrive, the chefs gave us an introduction to the class and guided us to the coffee, tea, and make your own hot cocoa station with an overflowing bowl of marshmallows. The two tables were set with gingerbread houses, bowls of colorful royal icing, and unlimited gumdrops, jelly beans, Hershey’s kisses and candy bars, hot tamales, Necco wafers, candy canes, and peppermints. The royal icing was handmade by the pastry chefs that morning.
Once everyone arrived, we immediately dug into the royal icing and candies. The parents and grandparents seemed to have as much fun as the children decorating, taking photos, and indulging in the buffet of colorful candies. The room was filled with the sound of holiday tunes, candy being unwrapped, as well as the team of pastry chefs giving each of us personal decorating tips.
The room was so filled with holiday spirit we all forgot about the rainy weather outside. I don’t know if I am more amazed at the gingerbread houses my girls made or the fact that these pastry chefs were able to keep my 2 1/2 year old focused and seated in a chair for two hours. This was as much of a learning experience as it was a wonderful opportunity to spend two hours of one-on-one time with your child, niece, nephew, or any child in your life.
I look forward to the day my girls and I can take the adult gingerbread making class together where we will get to learn how to roll the gingerbread dough, make royal icing, and learn more advanced gingerbread decorating techniques. This is one more holiday memory that my girls and I will never forget and hope to make a yearly tradition.
Next weekend is the last of this holiday season to participate in the Park Hyatt gingerbread house classes:
